Lactose lab
Are Yeast Lactose Intolerant?
Concepts:
- Cellular Respiration
- Disaccharide
- Monosaccharide
What is the Effect of Lactaid?
Hypotheses:
Overall Hypothesis: If lactaid is able to break down the disaccharide, lactose, into two monosaccharides, then when it is digested by yeast, it should help the yeast metabolize the lactose and create a large production of CO2.
Flask A: If lactaid, lactose, and yeast are mixed together and then added to room temperature water, then lactaid will break down lactose and therefore the yeast will produce large amounts of CO2.
Flask B: If lactose and yeast are added to the room temperature water, then no CO2 will be produced as the yeast cannot break down lactose.
Flask C: If glactose and yeast are added to room temperature water, then CO2 will be emitted but the galactose will be broken down less efficiently than the glucose.
Flask D: If glucose and yeast are added to water, then CO2 will be emitted and the glucose will be broken down very efficiently.

Video From the Lab
White balloon is Flask A (Lactose, lactaid, yeast) and yellow balloon is Flask B (Glucose and yeast). Video portrays how both of the latter two inflate while the others don't.
